The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) is an XML schema developed at IBM and since open-sourced. Recently reaching its 1.0 specification, DITA's approach combines the flexibility of XML with the extendability of object-orientation and the strictness of validating parsers. Tools for converting DITA documents into PDF, DocBook, HTML and Windows Help exist, utilizing XSLT and XSL Formatting Objects.
